Keepsake Cotton Heart

A soft, sculpted heart worked flat with a picot point and dramatic extended‑treble lobes. Designed by Marguerite of Magpie & Moss.

Materials

• 6 mm crochet hook

• Loops & Threads Twist Love Cotton (medium‑weight cotton)

• Scissors

• Yarn needle for weaving in ends

Special Stitches

Picot

Ch 3, sl st in the 3rd ch from hook.

Extended Treble Crochet (etr)

Yarn over twice, insert hook into stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop (4 loops on hook).

Yarn over, pull through one loop.

Yarn over, pull through two loops.

Yarn over, pull through two loops.

Yarn over, pull through two loops to finish.

Instructions

Base Rectangle

Foundation Chain

Ch 10.

Row 1

Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each remaining ch across.

9 sc

Turn.

Rows 2–9

Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch).

Sc in each st across.

9 sc

Turn after each row.

You now have a 9‑row rectangle.

Border Around Three Sides (Picot Point)

Do not turn after Row 9.

Down the First Side

Rotate your work.

Work 1 sc in the side of each row down the edge.

(9 sc)

Across the Bottom

Sc in each foundation stitch across.

(9 sc)

Picot Point

In the last bottom stitch before turning up the third side:

• Sc

• Picot (ch 3, sl st in 3rd ch from hook)

• Sc in the same stitch again

Up the Third Side

Work 1 sc in the side of each row up the edge.

(9 sc)

Do not work across Row 9.

This leaves the top edge open for the heart lobes.

Heart Lobes (Worked Into Row 9)

First Lobe

Sk the first 4 sts of Row 9.

In the 5th st, work 10 etr into the same stitch.

Sl st into the next corner stitch to anchor the lobe.

Second Lobe

Locate the 5th stitch from the opposite side of Row 9.

Work 10 etr into that stitch.

Sl st into the corner to anchor.

Your heart is now complete.

Finishing

• Weave in all ends.

• Lightly shape with your fingers or steam‑block if desired.

• Hearts can be used as appliqués, ornaments, bunting, gift toppers, or sewn onto garments and accessories.
