A Magpie & Moss Original Crochet Pattern
Description
A soft, textured mug rug featuring alternating crossed double crochets (“X”) and puff stitches (“O”), worked lengthwise for a clean, modern look. Designed to be beginner‑friendly while still offering satisfying texture.
Finished size: 7” wide × 5” tall
Hook: 6.0 mm
Yarn: Twist Love Cotton (or similar medium cotton)

Special Stitches
Stacked Single Crochet (counts as 1 dc)
Insert hook into first stitch, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through both loops (1 sc).
Insert hook into the left vertical bar of that sc, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through both loops.
This creates a straight‑edged dc without using a turning chain.
Crossed Double Crochet (X‑stitch)
Skip 1 stitch, dc in next stitch, then dc behind the stitch you just made into the skipped stitch.
Puff Stitch
Yarn over, insert hook into stitch, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook).
Repeat yarn over, insert, pull up a loop two more times (7 loops on hook).
Yarn over, pull through all loops, ch 1 to close.

• Pattern is worked lengthwise.
• Stitch count remains 22 stitches on every row.
• Ch‑1 never counts as a stitch.
• Always end on a Row 3 (sc row) for a clean top edge.
• Finished height of 5” is reached at 11 rows.

Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. 22 sc

Row 2 – X and O Row
Work 2 stacked sc in first st (counts as dc).
Skip 1 st, dc in next st, dc behind into skipped st (X‑stitch), puff in next st.
Repeat from * to * across.
Dc in last st. 22 sts

Row 3 – Reset Row
Ch 1 (does not count).
Sc in each st across. 22 sc

Repeat Rows 2–3 until you have 11 total rows, ending on a Row 3 (sc row).
Your finished piece should measure approximately 7” × 5”.

Work 1 round of sc evenly around, placing 3 sc in each corner.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
