About This Design
This Solomon’s Knot Market Bag is designed to be lightweight, airy, and strong; the perfect blend of open mesh and sturdy structure. The body is worked in a flowing Solomon’s Knot pattern that expands beautifully when filled, while the reinforced straps provide reliable support without adding bulk.
The finished bag has a clean, modern look with a soft drape and a generous 16” × 16” size, making it ideal for everyday use: groceries, beach days, craft projects, or quick trips out. The 27” straps offer a comfortable over‑the‑shoulder fit, and the 1” width gives them strength and stability.
This design is approachable for confident beginners and satisfying for experienced crocheters who enjoy rhythmic, open‑lace stitches. It’s also easily customizable; adjust the width, height, or handle placement to create a bag that fits your exact needs.
Materials List
• Worsted‑weight cotton yarn (approx. 250–350 yards)
• Crochet hook (about 5.0 mm / H‑8)

• Yarn needle
• Stitch markers
Bag pictured is 16” wide and 16” in height, with 27” straps (top of sc to highest point of the straps is 13.5”).
Foundation Row
Ch a multiple of 4 + 2.
Sc in 2nd ch from hook.
Solomon’s Knot (SK), skip 3 ch, sc in next ch across. (Repeat across)
Sc in last ch.
Row 2
Ch 5, and turn. At the top of the chain 5 work ½ SK, sc into the center sc of the first SK below. Work SK into the center sc of each SK across. At the end, work ½ SK, then tr into the last sc of Row 1.
Row 3
Ch 1 (does not count), sc into the top of the tr. Work SK into the center sc of each SK across. At the last SK, work one full SK, then sc into the top of the ch‑5 from Row 2.
Repeat Rows 2 and 3 until your panel reaches the desired length. Or for this pattern, 32” flat. End on Row 3.
Finishing Row
Ch 5 and Sc into the center sc of the first SK. Ch 3, sc into the center sc of the next SK across. At the last SK: ch 3, sc into the center sc. Ch 5, then slip stitch into the top of the single crochet below (the sc you made when starting Row 3).
Forming the Bag Body
Fold the panel in half so the two long sides meet.
First Side Seam
Holding both layers together, sc down the entire side. Fasten off, cut yarn, weave in end.
Second Side Seam
Attach yarn at the bottom corner with a slip stitch. Sc up the second side from bottom to top.
Top Edge Rounds
At the top, sc around the entire opening for 2 rounds. (For sample bag this is 112 sc.)
Handle Row (Row 3 of Top Edge)
Your stitch count may vary depending on bag size.
General method:
• sc across first section
• skip a section
• ch your handle length
• sc across back section
• skip second gap
• ch second handle
• sc to finish the round
• sl st to join
Then 2 rounds or more (your preference) of sc for strap thickness.
For my sample bag, work 22 sc, skip 12, and ch 80 (this is the first handle), the attach and work 44 sc, skip 12 and ch 80 to create second handle, then work sc in the next 22 stitches and sl st to join. Then 2 rounds of sc for strap thickness to be 1”.
Sample Bag (Finished Measurements)
• Bag size: 16” wide × 16” high
• Top opening: 56 sc
• Strap length: 27” total
• Strap width: 1”
Sample Bag in Use
The finished Solomon’s Knot Market Bag comfortably holds everyday groceries and essentials. In this example, the bag is filled with:
• a can of apple pie filling
• a container of Crystal Light
• a box of raisins
• two bags of mini potatoes

The mesh expands naturally around the items while the reinforced 1” straps support the weight without stretching. This makes the bag ideal for shopping, produce, and general daily use.

Final Finishing Section
1. Fasten off.
2. Weave in all ends.
3. Check strap thickness and symmetry.
4. Lightly stretch and shape the bag so the mesh opens evenly.
5. Block if desired.
Care & Washing
• Hand wash in cool or lukewarm water with mild detergent.
• Gently squeeze (don’t wring) to remove excess water.
• Reshape the bag, opening the mesh evenly and laying the straps flat.
• Air dry flat or hang to dry.
• Lightly mist stretched straps and lay flat to help them return to shape.
• Machine wash on gentle inside a laundry bag if needed.
• Avoid bleach or fabric softener.
Notes & Tips
• The Solomon’s Knot mesh stretches with use.
• Keep knot loops consistent for an even look.
• Seam carefully to avoid twisting.
• Adjust handle spacing if your stitch count differs.
• Add extra rounds of single crochet on the straps for more strength.
• Cotton yarn gives durability and minimal stretch.
• Light blocking helps open the mesh.
• Stitch markers help when adjusting handle placement.
